Part One
By Femi A. Falade
We are deceived by the fallacy of what we claim when we make spiritual affirmations, melodies, sing or even read. All of that, sadly, fail to communicate our lives to others. I have once charged some people who sang “when the spirit of the Lord is upon my soul, I will dance like David danced”. While they sing, some would even sit and claim they are dancing like David did, they are beside themselves unnoticeably.
This same matter surfaced in the popular song “My Head, My Shoulder, My Knees, My Toes, My Head, My Shoulder, My Knees, My Toes, My Head, My Shoulder, My Knees, My Toes, all belong to you!”. I see this as a fallacy that need to be construe and be carefully minded.
This song is a song of humility but it has soon turned to a song for physical exercise. Till today, many sing it as a mere song. I want to tell you that, that song is not just a song, it is a spiritual song for those who could discern spiritual things. It is to show our readiness to humble ourselves and live the way God wants us to live. The message of humility has been seen as too boring and too simple, yet, it remains one of the most difficult things to do in life.
The song speaks of us, believers. Our head, shoulder, knees and toes must come to the place of total submission unto God. It signifies our brokenness. Each of them has a meaning.
MY HEAD
One’s head signifies his crown. The head is the most physically respected part of our body. We can assume that the head controls the body. It has the most sensitive and important part of our body. It also has the brain, the chief executive officer of the affairs of our body’s country. When we are made a head of a place, we see ourselves as the master and we control men whom regardless of their ages, must give salutation to us.
That head God said he needs it. And in our song, we say we give him. Where do we see the head that claims that others does show regards to him? Where do we see the head that reason and say, “I have my way, please mind your business” to God? How does the eyes we have submitted unto God suddenly look into sexual materials and fulfill its lust? The ear, being part of the head, we submit to God still hear satanic songs? Something must be wrong somewhere!
We must cast our crowns, we must give up the head to Jesus the master and whatever we are made to be, we must not claim to be one. We must see ourselves as nothing since we have summited our head to God.
MY SHOULDER
My shoulder gives me shape. It makes me looks good when in a nice shirt. When I put on “Agbada” (A style of native attire of the Yoruba people of Nigeria) or Suits, I look good and shaped. Could that be pride of life?
Our shoulders must not show that we are uncontrollable or “too big to control”. Our shoulders represent our pride and we sing that all belong to God. We say God our shoulder is yours and yet pride swallows us. God we are sorry. Our pride must be totally submitted to God as we claimed.
Our shoulder also represents what we have such as our position, wealth, properties and so on. If we really mean we want to follow God, we must submit it with all its pride. We must deal with pride in our lives and daily pursuits. This should be so obvious that, if we attempt to sing the song, people should say, no need we can see that in your life!
I heard this melody “Submitting Everything, in Obedience to Christ”. This will take us to the part two of this article.
Thank You father for your grace,
Your Servant,
