MAKE YOUR ELECTION SURE: LETTER TO THE NEWLY POLITICAL OFFICERS ELECTED IN NIGERIAN 2019 ELECTION
By Prophet Femi A. Falade
CONGRATULATIONS
Let me first of all congratulate you all for your destined and undestined successes in the general election to your various political offices. May God grant you grace to know that your election is by God and it is not of he that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy.
I write not as a politician but as an instructor to them as the Lord had granted me grace which also resulted to the writing of my book, Political and Economic Empowerment Kits For Christians. (You can order for the book, this article is an excerpt of it).
THE ERROR
No matter how belittled or unimportant you are, if you are elected as a counsellor of a ward or President of a nation, there are responsibilities which lie on you both to God and to the men whom you are called to serve.
I recall vividly at the time we were given orientation by the then President, Bro. Gbenga Olaniyi of Anglican Students’ Fellowship, Adekunle Ajasin University Branch in Akungba-Akoko (2014/2015 academic session), in October 2016. He made a statement which I was hearing for the first time then. He said “leadership does not make people more responsible to you but makes you more responsible to people” and “leadership does not make you more important to people but people more important to you”. Being the first time I heard those words, it re-echoed many times in my ears till I understood it. These words are true, unfortunately, many people found in leadership positions today have continued to reason this way: Now that we are leaders, we are more important and people must be responsible to us. This is an abnormal approach to leadership most especially Christian leaders in public offices.
YOUR ELECTION IS BY GOD
No matter the amount you spent on your campaigns so as to get people's support, you must acknowledge that your election is by God. God decided to make you the best candidate for His assignment in the political sphere at that time and you must not disappoint God. Knowing your election will help you remember the purpose you were called into that public office and how to carry them out. Paul the Apostle says:
Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father; Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. (I Thessalonians 1:3-4)
“Knowing”- knowing their election is by God, you must keep knowing. I observe that the purpose for which God chose many people in politics is strategic. Why did God chose Joseph as Prime Minister in Egypt in his time? Of course, it was to save the generation of God’s people who were the remnant for God’s plans for the generations to come. God brought His political minister/servant called Mr. Joseph to fulfil the prophecy which He spoke to Abraham and to preserve God’s people for what He has for them. When God brought Joseph to Egypt, he would have misbehaved and do it the way he wanted if he had not understood the purpose of His election. Genesis chapter 41:44-50 told us the focus and activities of Joseph; a man who understands the purpose of his calling into the politics:
We can see that Joseph did not start saving those plenty in his personal account or open a domiciliary account to keep the money. He knew he was selected by God to be an economic rescue agent for those generations. He did not take it for granted but did his job the way he should do it. Reason being that he understood his purpose.
The surprising thing about Joseph was what pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. What a great door for exploration for the man Joseph! The bible did not record that Joseph took 5% each from the goods bought as his own gain like some of these public office holders do these days, especially when they pioneer certain developments in their political-geographical terrain or awarded a contract.
The bible makes us understand that other countries came to Egypt to buy corn from Joseph because there was famine in other lands. Joseph became the man of the season because people cannot live without food. He did not place them on personal charge and matter. He makes his country rich not his pocket. He saved generations from dying in hunger. That was the purpose of his election and he did not disappoint God. If you know the purpose of your election you are a bit close to succeed in the office God placed you.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR ELECTION SURE
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: (2 Peter 1:10)
Having known your election which the bible called the election of grace as seen in Romans chapter eleven verse five and in comparism to Romans chapter nine verses fifteen and sixteen:
For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
You ought to perform the purpose of your election. Let your impact be felt, avoid pollution and corruption. Neglect the caucus of those who are looking for stealing mates. Let people rejoice that a man after God’s heart has been appointed. Let everything be done according to the laid down pattern by the Father. Rededicate your life to God and confess to Him that you will serve His purpose.
Heavens beckons, earth cries, let the elected do what pleases God and blesses humanity.
Grace!
I hope this letter will not stand against you when you give account of what you have done before God!
Bless you and Happy weekend.
